Randolph-Macon Knocks Off St. Mary’s 10-7 in Regular Season Finale
ASHLAND, VA – The Randolph-Macon College baseball team closed out its 2007 regular season with a 10-7 victory over St. Mary’s College in Ashland on Tuesday afternoon.
R-MC (19-18-1) banged out 15 hits on the day, led by Chris Dykes, Charlie Hartt and J.C. Conway who all had three hits on the afternoon. Greg Meleski drove in three runs on the day while Hartt and Mike Wallace each drove in a pair.
Yellow Jacket starter Devin O’Mera got the win to improve his record to 2-2 on the season. O’Mera surrendered six runs and struck out four before giving way to Bo Garner who allowed one run over three innings of work. Mike Gerdes then closed the door in the ninth inning to pick up his second save of the season.
Each team scored a pair of runs in their first at bat before Randolph-Macon struck for three runs in the home-half of the second inning to go up 5-2.
SMC fought back with a single run in the third inning and then plated three runs in the fifthto take a 6-5 lead.
R-MC responded in their next at bat by scoring four runs to go up for good at 9-6. The big hits of the inning came when Wallace delivered a bases loaded single to score Nick Wille and Joey Crawford. After a Dykes ground out, Meleski singled to score Bobby White and Wallace.
SMC cut the lead to 9-7 on a solo home run Mike Broccolino in the top half of the sixth inning. Broccolino finished the game 3-for-3 with two RBI, two runs scored and a single shy of hitting for the cycle.
R-MC tacked on an insurance run with two-outs in the eighth when Dykes singled home Conway who had started the frame with a single of his own.
Randolph-Macon will be back in action on Thursday at the 2007 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament which will be held at City Stadium in Lynchburg. The sixth-seeded Jackets will take on the top-seed Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan at 11:00 a.m.
