Randolph-Macon Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Roanoke
ASHLAND, VA – The Randolph-Macon baseball team split and ODAC doubleheader with Roanoke College on Saturday afternoon in Ashland. The Yellow Jackets took game one 1-0 in eight innings, while the Maroons rebounded for a 7-6 victory in game two. With the split, R-MC now stands at 12-9-1 overall and 3-4 in league play while RC is 5-15 and 4-3 in the ODAC.
In game one, Randolph-Macon starter Kurt Breitmeyer and Roanoke starter Jonathan Wills locked up in pitchers dual with neither allowing a run over the scheduled seven inning game. In the bottom of the eighth, R-MC’s Chris Dykes led off with a double. After moving to second on a sacrifice bunt, pinch-runner Dann Woods scored the winning run on a fielder’s choice. Woods was able to beat Roanoke’s throw home to give the Jackets the win.
R-MC’s Nick Simmons pitched the eighth inning allowing just one walk after relieving Breitmeyer to pick up his first win of the year. Wills was the hard luck loser for Roanoke, dropping his record to 1-4 on the season.
In game two, R-MC scored three first inning runs to take an early 3-1 lead. Roanoke answered by scoring a pair of runs in the next half inning to tie the game at 3-3.
After the Maroons scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, R-MC cut the deficit to 5-4 in the fifth when Charlie Hartt doubled home Dykes who had singled to open up the inning.
RC tacked on a pair of runs in the visitor half of the seventh inning before R-MC capitalized on a throwing error by the Maroons to score a pair of runs to cut the lead to 7-6 in the seventh. That was a close as the Jackets could get, leaving the bases loaded that inning and were not able to score in their last two at bats.
