(Information Provided by Averett Sports Information)
DANVILLE, Va. – Offense was the name of the game when the Averett University baseball team hosted the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College on Saturday. There were 36 total hits in the game, 20 by the Cougars, as Averett defeated RMC by a final of 11-7.
The Cougars (5-0) matched the Yellow Jackets (0-1) through the first inning, with both teams scoring a run each. The Cougars however refused to go run for run with RMC, and stopped them in the top of the second and put four runs across in the bottom.
Averett started the inning with four straight hits from Justin Brown, Jake Loye, and Eric Sibrizzi, with the fourth hit coming from Ahmed Shelton to give him a pair of RBIs. An error allowed Sibrizzi to score, and Pierce Steinruck smashed a double to left field that scored T.J. Bray.
Randolph-Macon would tie the game up in the fourth on their own four run inning, forcing head coach Ed Fulton to replace starting pitcher Justin Crowl with reliever Jon Walker.
With Walker on the mound, the Cougars only gave up two more runs in the game, and scored another six of their own. Walker would pitch all the way to two outs in the top of the ninth and take the win, before Fulton brought in Chase Hall to get the last out and the save.
On the day for the Cougars, Loye batted 4-for-5 on the day with three runs and two RBIs. Behind him was Brown who was 3-for-4 with two runs, and Ahmed Shelton who hit 3-for-6 with one run and two RBIs. For the Yellow Jackets, Michael Wallace hit 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs.
The Cougars will host the Yellow Jackets again tomorrow, Sunday, February 11, for the second and final game of the series. That game is scheduled for a 1:00 PM first pitch.
