Former R-MC Standout Travis Beazley Promoted by Boston Red Sox
ASHLAND, Va. --- Former Randolph-Macon College All-American pitcher Travis Beazley was promoted by the Boston Red Sox Thursday to its Advanced Class -A affiliate in Lancaster, California.
Beazley earned the called up after posting six victories in 15 starts with the Greenville Drive of the South Atlantic League. At the time of his call up, Beazley led the Drive in wins, innings pitched with 101.2 , and his 92 strikes out was tops on the team and ranked fifth in the league.
2007 marks Beazley’s second season in professional baseball after being taken in the 38th-round of the 2006 Major League Draft by the Sox. A native of Beaverdam Va. and a graduate of Patrick Henry High School, Beazley made 14 appearances with 13 starts on the mound last season for the for the short-season Lowell Spinners squad, recording a 3-2 record with a 2.39 ERA in 67.2 innings pitched. Beazley struck out a team best 59 batters while walking just 19 during the season. Beazley’s ERA and strike outs ranked eighth and 17th, respectively among pitchers in the New York-Penn League this season.
As a senior at R-MC in 2006, Beazley’s numbers included a program single-season record 108 strikeouts, a 1.94 earned run average, and a 9-3 record in 88.0 innings pitched. He struck out an ODAC and R-MC single-game-record 17 batters in the season finale against Newport News Apprentice School on May 2nd, picking up a win over 8.2 innings in the 9-2 affair, and also broke the school career strikeout record that day, finishing with 216. His nine victories tied the program’s record for wins in a season.
For his efforts, he was named a 2006 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) second-team Division III All-American, becoming Randolph-Macon baseball’s first-ever All-American on the Division III level. He was also named the ABCA Division III SouthRegion Pitcher of the Year, first-team all-region and first-team all-state by the Virginia Sports Information Directors.
