ASHLAND, VA -- Former Randolph-Macon College standout Travis Beazley has been assigned to the Boston Red Sox’s Single-A affiliate Greenville Drive located in Greenville, South Carolina. Beazley will be under the tutelage of manager and former Red Sox Gabe Kapler while in Greenville.
A native of Beaverdam, Va., and a graduate of Patrick Henry High School, Beazley made 14 appearances with 13 starts on the mound last season for the Sox other Single-A team the Lowell Spinners, recording a 3-2 record with a 2.39 ERA in 67.2 innings pitched. Beazley struck out a team best 59 batters while walking just 19 during the season. Beazley’s ERA and strike outs ranked eighth and 17th, respectively among pitchers in the New York-Penn League this season.
Taken in the 38th-round of last June’s Major League Baseball Amateur Draft by the Sox, Beazley graduated from R-MC in 2006 and was the only Division III player drafted in Virginia and one of only two ODAC players to be taken in the draft. He also is the first R-MC player to be selected in the major league baseball amateur draft in recent memory.
As a senior in 2006, Beazley’s numbers included a program single-season record 108 strikeouts, a 1.94 earned run average, and a 9-3 record in 88.0 innings pitched. He struck out an ODAC and R-MC single-game-record 17 batters in the season finale against Newport News Apprentice School on May 2nd, picking up a win over 8.2 innings in the 9-2 affair, and also broke the school career strikeout record that day, finishing with 216. His nine victories tied the program’s record for wins in a season.
The 2006 ODAC Pitcher-of-the-Year, Beazley was first in the league in strikeouts and innings pitched, tied for first in wins and games started (12), and second in opponent batting average (.224). In the NCAA, he was ranked ninth in victories and 16th in strikeouts per nine innings.
For his efforts, he was named a 2006 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) second-team Division III All-American, becoming Randolph-Macon baseball’s first-ever All-American on the Division III level. He was also named the ABCA Division III SouthRegion Pitcher of the Year, first-team all-region and first-team all-state by the Virginia Sports Information Directors.
A transfer to R-MC as a sophomore, Beazley was a team captain all three years with the Yellow Jackets and a two-time team Most Valuable Player.
