Randolph-Macon Baseball to Hold All-Star Pitching Camp
Local Standouts Travis Beazley, Chris Ray and John Maine Scheduled to Appear
ASHLAND , VA – Randolph-Macon College baseball head coach Ray Hedrick announced Wednesday that R-MC will hold its first All-Star Pitching Camp January 27-28 at the Virginia Sports Complex in Ruther Glen.
The camp which is open to players 8-to-18 years of age, will feature instruction from major leaguers and local standouts Travis Beazley, Chris Ray and John Maine.
Beazley recently completed his first season in professional baseball as a member of the Lowell Spinners which is the Single-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox.
A native of Beaverdam, Va., a graduate of Patrick Henry High School and R-MC, Beazley made 14 appearances with 13 starts on the mound for the Spinners, recording a 3-2 record with a 2.39 ERA in 67.2 innings pitched. Beazley struck out a team best 59 batters while walking just 19 during the season. Beazley’s ERA and strike outs ranked eighth and 17th, respectively among pitchers in the New York-Penn League this season.
Ray just completed his second full season with the Baltimore Orioles. Ray, who attended William and Mary before being taken with the 74th pick in the 2003 draft by the O’s, posted 33 saves last season to go along with a 2.73 ERA in 61 appearances.
Maine is a native of Stafford, Va. and currently in the starting rotation of the 2006 National East Division Champion New York Mets squad. Last season, Maine went 6-5 in 15 starts including two in the National League Championship Series. Maine attended UNC Charlotte where he earned Conference-USA Pitcher of the Year honors in 2001.
The cost of the camp is 100 dollars if pre-registered, 150 dollars at the door and is limited to the first 80 campers to sign up. In addition to the instruction from the major leaguers, there will be a question and answer segment and autograph opportunities for the campers.
In addition to the pitching camp, Hedrick will be offering a coaches camp during the same time as the player camp. The camp will include one hour of instruction and info each day followed by a half-hour of Q & A with instructors and major leaguer in attendance that day. The camp is open to 50 coaches at $50.00 a person if pre-registered and 100 dollars at the door.
