Saturday, August 20th
The Randolph-Macon College men's basketball team, in its last game in Chile Saturday evening, earned a huge upset 73-69 victory over Club Sportivo Ben Hur. This opponent is one of the top professional teams from Argentina, and led by Julio Lamas, former coach of that country's national team.
Finishing fourth in the Encestando Una Sonrisa tournament, the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets put together their best game of the week. Leading the way for Randolph-Macon was rising senior forward Justin Wansley (Richmond, VA/Henrico), who exploded for 29 points and 9 rebounds. Junior guard Stephen Sutherland (Morgantown, WV/Fairmont) totaled 11 points and 3 assists.
Also for the Yellow Jackets, sophomore guard Brett Foelber (Sykesville, MD/Cardinal Gibbons) had his best showing of the week, with 9 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists. Junior guard Adam Krovic (Durham, NC/Jordan) added 5 points and 2 steals.
Big plays down the stretch by Wansley, key baskets by Foelber, and a three-pointer by senior guard Patrick Gill (Richmond, VA/Benedictine) were all crucial in this win. The Yellow Jackets were able to hang around for the first three quarters, and were fired up in the fourth, playing great team defense and holding Club Sportivo Ben Hur to just 14 points.
The Yellow Jackets will leave Santiago late Sunday evening and arrive home in Virginia Monday afternoon.
Friday, August 19th
Club Uniti Uberlandia 88, Randolph-Macon College 60
The Yellow Jackets were led by senior forward Justin Wansley (Richmond, VA/Henrico), with 17 points and 6 rebounds. Sophmore guard Brett Foelber (Sykesville, MD/Cardinal Gibbons) had 6 points and 2 assists.
Also for Randolph-Macon, junior guard Adam Krovic (Durham, NC/Jordan) totaled 4 points, 4 assists and 3 rebounds. Junior guard Stephen Sutherland (Morgantown, WV/Fairmont) added 3 points and 2 assists.
This opponent is the champion of the Brazilian professional league. Randolph-Macon was down 28-8 early, but played very well the rest of the way.
Saturday's opponent will be Club Sportivo Ben Hur, a South American club champion last year. The Yellow Jackets will fly home to the United States late Sunday.
Thursday, August 18th
Atenas de Cordoba 87, Randolph-Macon College 54
Leading Randolph-Macon was senior forward Justin Wansley (Richmond, VA/Henrico), with 17 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Junior forward Philip Hawley (Weirton, WV/Tri-State Christian Academy) totaled 11 points and 4 rebounds.
Also for the Yellow Jackets, junior guard Stephen Sutherland (Morgantown, WV/Fairmont) added 8 points and 6 assists. Junior guard Adam Krovic (Durham, NC/Jordan) contributed with 6 points and 2 steals.
Randolph-Macon had an excellent first quarter, trailing by only two points, 17-15, heading into the second. Atenas de Cordoba led by 11 points, 35-24, at halftime. This opponent is the top professional team in Argentina, featuring two national team players.
Friday's opponent is Club Uniti Uberlandia, the current champion of the Brazilian professional league.
Wednesday, August 17th
Universidad Catolica 80, Randolph-Macon College 65
This game marked the beginning of the "Encestando Una Sonrisa" tournament. Senior forward Justin Wansley (Richmond, VA/Henrico) led the Yellow Jackets with 20 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Senior guard Patrick Gill (Richmond, VA/Benedictine) totaled 13 points and 4 assists.
Also for Randolph-Macon, junoir guard Stephen Sutherland (Morgantown, WV/Fairmont) had 8 points and 5 assists. Senior guard Rob Harris (Irvington, NJ/St. Benedict's Prep.) contributed with 6 points and 4 steals.
The Yellow Jackets played very well for part of the game, leading by 11 points at one time. Randolph-Macon was down by only one point at halftime, 39-38, and trailed by only three points at the end of the third quarter, 53-50.
Thursday's scheduled opponent, Atenas de Cordoba, is the most successful professional team from Argentina over the last ten years.
Tuesday, August 16th
Universidad Catolica 54, Randolph-Macon College 37
Senior forward Justin Wansley (Richmond, VA/Henrico) led Randolph-Macon with 14 points and 15 rebounds. Junior forward Philip Hawley (Weirton, WV/Tri-State Christian Academy) had 6 points and 6 rebounds.
Senior guard Patrick Gill (Richmond, VA/Benedictine) contributed with 5 points and 6 assists. Sophomore forward Jeremy Dixon (Manheim, PA/Hempfield) added 4 points and 7 rebounds.
The Yellow Jackets got down early in the game and trailed by 15 points at halftime. R-MC did cut the deficit to 9 points twice, but that was as close as the Yellow Jackets would get.
Sunday, August 14th
Randolph-Macon College 96, Universidad de las Americas 57
Junior forward Philip Hawley (Weirton, WV/Tri-State Christian Academy) led the Yellow Jackets with 23 points and 5 rebounds. Senior forward Justin Wansley (Richmond, VA/Henrico) totaled 17 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists.
Sophomore forward Jeremy Dixon (Manheim, PA/Hempfield) had 10 points and 9 rebounds. Senior guard Patrick Gill (Richmond, VA/Benedictine) also scored 10 points, and distributed 4 assists.
Junior guard Adam Krovic (Durham, NC/Jordan) and sophomore guard Brett Foelber (Sykesville, MD/Cardinal Gibbons) each scored nine points. Krovic also had 6 assists, while Foelber had 2 assists. Junior guard Loren Sisson (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry Collegiate) added 8 points.
The Yellow Jackets used excellent team play and strong team defense to earn the victory. Many R-MC players saw action and scored points.
Saturday, August 13th
Randolph-Macon College 82, Universidad de las Americas 61
Leading Randolph-Macon was sophomore forward Jeremy Dixon (Manheim, PA/Hempfield), with 15 points and 7 rebounds. Junior guard Stephen Sutherland (Morgantown, WV/Fairmont) had 11 points, 8 assists and 4 steals.
Senior forward Justin Wansley (Richmond, VA/Henrico) had 10 points and 11 rebounds. Senior guard Patrick Gill (Richmond, VA/Benedictine) also scored 10 points, and had 2 steals.
Sophomore guard Brett Foelber (Sykesville, MD/Cardinal Gibbons) added 6 points and 5 steals. Junior guard Adam Krovic (Durham, NC/Jordan) contributed with 6 points, 3 assists and 2 steals.
Randolph-Macon played extremely well as a team en route to this win.
