R-MC's Rhoades is Co-Coach of the Year; Bergmann is Freshman of
the Year
Mills Named Second-Team All-ODAC; Smith Honorable Mention Selection
Salem, Va - Virginia Wesleyan's Ron Yuhasz has been named the
Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Men's Basketball Player of the
Year while Randolph-Macon's Kurt
Bergmann is the Freshman of the Year. Guilford head coach
Butch Estes and Randolph-Macon head coach Mike
Rhoades were selected as ODAC Co-Coaches of the Year.
A senior, Yuhasz was named ODAC Player of the Week and the Columbus Multimedia
National Player of the Week for the week of November 27th. He is currently
18th in the nation in scoring and 21st in the nation in rebounding with
a 21.7 points per game average and 10.0 rebounds per game. Yuhasz tallied
14 double-doubles on the season (28 career), has scored 1,231 points and
grabbed 605 rebounds to date. He scored a career-high 34 points versus
Christopher Newport on November 21, 2000 and tied his career-high 16 rebounds
versus Salisbury State (12/13/00) and Emory & Henry (1/6/01). Yuhasz was
the high scorer in 17 of the Marlins' contests this season and high rebounder
in 16. He leads Virginia Wesleyan and the ODAC in scoring and rebounding.
He is second in the conference with a 51.7% field goal percentage and
with 41 blocked shots. Yuhasz is also seventh in the ODAC with a 74.8%
free throw percentage.
Randolph-Macon's Kurt Bergmann was selected as the Freshman
of the Year. The Yellow Jacket's leading rebounder at 6.1 rebounds
per game, he is also third on the team in scoring at 9.0 points per game.
He is also an outstanding defender as he is third on the squad in steals
with 1.4 per contest. Bergmann has led the team in scoring in 10
games and rebounding in two games. He has also scored in double figures
in 11 games and grabbed double-digit rebounds once. His career-highs include
18 points against Bridgewater, 12 rebounds against Lynchburg, three assists
at Virginia Military Institute, and 35 minutes played against Roanoke.
As shown in his career-high 18-point performance in a win over Bridgewater,
Bergmann is a smooth player with a nice mid-range jumpshot who
can run the court and handle the ball.
Head coach Butch Estes led Guilford to a 10-14, 9-9 regular season record.
His team is making its first ODAC Tournament appearance since 1994-95,
a span of six seasons. The Quakers won a school-record nine ODAC games
this season to secure the tournament's sixth seed. Coach Mike Rhoades
led the Yellow Jackets to a 15-9, 12-6 regular season record in just his
second season at Randolph-Macon. He improved on his first season at the
helm, as the Yellow Jackets finished 13-12 overall and 10-8 in the conference
in 1999-2000.
Also honored from Randolph-Macon were sophomore forward Jared
Mills, a second-team selection, and sophomore guard Tim
Smith, a Honorable Mention pick. Mills was the ODAC Freshman
of the Year last season. He is Randolph-Macon's leading scorer and second-leading
rebounder. Smith, meanwhile, is arguably one of the most improved
players on the Yellow Jacket squad this year. He has led the team in both
steals and assists, and is the second-leading scorer.
