International Education, Semester Abroad
Do you plan to participate in a Non-Randolph-Macon Semester
Abroad Program?
Randolph-Macon's Office of International Education supports more
than sixteen college-approved semester
abroad programs in over a dozen countries. Our office also has
information about semester abroad programs offered by other institutions.
We encourage you to browse these materials if you are interested
in study abroad opportunities other than those offered at Randolph-Macon.
However, students who elect to pursue a semester abroad program
through another college, university, or other institution must make
arrangements for doing so themselves.
If you plan to participate in a non-Randolph-Macon semester
abroad program, and intend to return to Randolph-Macon College for
further study, you must complete two forms and submit them to the
Registrar's office before beginning your period of study abroad:
1. APPLICATION FOR STUDENT ON LEAVE
2. TRANSFER CREDIT PERMISSION FORM
Both forms are available on the rack outside the Registrar's office
in Peele Hall.
The APPLICATION FOR STUDENT ON LEAVE form officially notifies
the college you will be away from the school but plan to return.
It requires several signatures, so make sure you allow enough time
to complete the form. By completing this form you:
- make it easier to return to Randolph-Macon after your absence
- make it possible to stay in the loop with respect to housing
and preregistration for when you return
If your application for leave is approved, you must complete the
non-Randolph-Macon study abroad program during the period specified.
If you do not complete the Application for Student on Leave form,
or are approved for a period of leave but fail to complete the study
abroad program for which you were approved, you will have to reapply
for admission to Randolph-Macon before you can return to the college
as a student.
The TRANSFER CREDIT PERMISSION FORM is used to verify in
advance that courses you plan to take abroad will transfer back
to Randolph-Macon College, assuming you successfully complete the
courses during your semester abroad program. It requires the chairperson's
signature of the department at Randolph-Macon most closely associated
with each course you plan to take overseas. For example, if you
plan to take courses in Biology, Philosophy, and Sociology while
abroad, use the Transfer Credit Permission Form to request permission
to take the courses abroad from the chairs of those departments
at R-MC. You will probably be asked to provide course descriptions
for each class you intend to take abroad when you meet with R-MC
department chairs. The Transfer Credit Permission Form is also the
means by which R-MC department chairs specify the equivalent Randolph-Macon
course, if any, for courses you intend to take abroad. If there
is no R-MC equivalent for a course you plan to take abroad, the
course may still transfer back to R-MC as an elective, but again
only with the approval of the respective R-MC department chair.
Either way, by completing the Transfer Credit Permission Form you
will know whether the courses you plan to take abroad will transfer
back to R-MC and, if so, how they will count toward your graduation
requirements.
