Ashley's Experiences
Spending J-Term in Ghana was an incredible experience
I felt very fortunate to have. The culture in Ghana is like nothing I have ever
experienced. It fascinated me to see how different the everyday lives of these people
were so different from my own. I found Ghanaians to be some of the friendliest people
I have ever met. It was interesting, however, to see the different ways in which
Ghanaians show hospitality and kindness, for them offering guests a coke is a big
deal whereas getting a coke in America is very common. I did have trouble communicating
at times even though most spoke English, their accents made its difficult for us
to carry on conversations. During our time in Ghana we were able to visit hospitals,
psychiatric hospitals, and traditional healers. These visits were truly an eye-opening
experience into how privileged we are as Americans and also into the different beliefs
and practices of another culture. We were also given the opportunity to spend two
days with a Ghanaian family. This experience was for me the most profound. The family
I stayed with was incredibly nice and very welcoming. Seeing the day to day lives
of this family gave me great insight into Ghanaian culture. Adjusting to Ghanaian
food was perhaps the most difficult part of my trip to Ghana. I did try two traditional
Ghanaian dishes while staying with the family, Banku and Fufu and I truly hope I
never have to have either of these again. The only other problem I struggled with
in Ghana was feeling taken advantage of because I am an American. I felt that it
was assumed that all Americans are rich and often found prices were increased for
us. All in all I truly enjoyed my trip to Ghana and am so happy to have had this
experience as it has opened my eyes to a culture that I have never experienced.
