Our Experiences

Our experience in Ghana was both shocking and moving. Upon our arrival to Accra we experienced what any foreigner would,
culture shock. After the initial shock had faded and we became more accustomed to the culture, we had a wonderful time and were able to learn a great
deal about their cultures and ourselves. We were able to experience personal interactions with Ghanaians from various ethnic backgrounds such as the Asante, Ga, Ewe, Fante, Akkan, to name just a few. We were also lucky enough to enjoy their cultures first hand by doing a home stay for two days in Ho. This gave us a great chance to understand and relate to their customs. The majority of Ghanaians who live in poverty are not homeless. Their sense of community is almost incomparable to that of America’s, everyone knows each other and is constantly looking out for one another.
Another aspect of Ghana that moved us was the sense of kindness we experienced from the natives. Each personal interaction with a Ghanaian was positive. They were all so excited to talk about their culture and show us their customs. Also, no one ever seemed to be in a rush, they were always relaxed. You could almost always find someone napping on a bench or resting beneath a tree. Learning about the educational institutions and medical facilities was one of the more difficult parts of the learning experience. We say this because it is hard to see outdated equipment and standard medicines and equipment missing when it is so readily available in our country. It made us understand how truly lucky we are.
Another aspect of the culture that we enjoyed greatly was the beautiful Kente clothes, wood carvings and music. Although this experienced changed how we see the world, it also allowed us to see how similar such different parts of the world can be. The Ghanaians want the same thing from life as we do, love, education, peace and health. Ghana is a wonderful place and we would highly recommend traveling there, it would be a life changing experience.
