Your teacher has assigned you work where you are required to record your speaking.
Follow the steps below to access audio recording and record your responses (while still listening).
Opening/Importing Pre-recorded Audio Segments
1. Double-click on the “Audacity” [
] program icon. (I f you do not see the shortcut directly on the desktop, double-click on “Program Shortcuts” on the “desktop”).
2. Once Audacity opens, click on the word “File” on the menu bar at the top left corner of your screen.

3. From the pull-down menu, click on “Open”. (Figure 2)
4. Double-click on “My Computer” (Figure 3).

5. Double-click on “H: Classes on ‘rmclabnet1’” (Figure 4).
6. Double-click on your course’s Department, for example “RomanceLanguages”. (Figure 5)

7. Once the RomanceLanguages Folder has been opened, double-click on either “French Speaking Exercises” or “Spanish Speaking Exercises” according to the language that you are studying. (Figure 6)
8. Double-click on the appropriate folder for your assignment – usually this will be your textbook’s title, for example “Interactions Lab Audio CD Files (mp3)”. (Figure 7)

9. Double-click on the specific assignment – usually this will be your chapter, lesson, module, CD number or assignment number/title. For example “Disc 1” (Figure 8).

10. Double-click on the specific activity or track assigned by your teacher listed in the folder (in the chapter you’re studying).
Note: For activities that accompany your lab manual or workbook, the title should correspond to the page and/or activity number of your book.
Note: Activities that your instructor has recorded for you, are located in the folder named for your instructor.
11. After you have double-clicked on one item, it will be imported into Audacity. (Figure 9)

12. After the files have completed importing, you will see two lines that indicate that the opened file is an audio segment that is in stereo (with two tracks). (Figure 10)

Listening, Recording and Saving your Voice Recording
1. Click on the red circle to play the recording AND record your speaking (at the same time). The green triangle will play only. Press the yellow square to stop recording. (Figure 11)

2. After you have clicked on the record button, you will see your track below the one you imported.
3. After you have finished your recording, close the imported (pre-recorded) track. (Figure 12)

4. Click on “File” on the menu bar. From the pull down menu, select “Export as MP3.” (Figure 13)
5. You will see a file menu appear. If not already selected, within the Romance Languages folder, select “French Speaking Exercises.” This time, double-click on your professor’s name. (Figure 14)

6. Double-click on the folder with your class name on it. In that folder, you will find a folder with your name on it. You must select this folder to save your work.
7. After you have selected the folder and given your file a name, click the “Save” button.
8. You will see a pop-up box for data about your recording. You may enter data or simply click the “OK” button.(Figure 15)

9. You may now close your recording.
NOTE: Always make sure that you listen to the recording in your class folder to ensure that they saved properly. Any files that are missing or incorrectly saved cannot be retrieved by language lab staff or ITS since you are saving to a network folder.
10. Your instructor will check your recording from the class folder under her/his name with your name on it. Failure to save your recordings into that folder as an MP3 may result in a grade of 0.
