Class of 1999

Alvin W. Carter, Jr., from Richmond, Virginia, graduated in the spring of 1999. He completed his undergraduate years at R-MC with a major in Physics, after first thinking of himself as a biology major. He actually completed his course work in January 1999, when he did a project involving holographic imaging of a vibrating loudspeaker. Based on recent phone calls, he continues an avid interest in holography, which he is pursuing as a hobby. Alvin began work as a nuclear engineer in the Lynchburg area.

Class of 1998

Eva Sherie Kim, (everbody calls her Sherie) graduated with honors in the spring of 1998. She completed her four years at R-MC with a major in Physics, and minors in Mathematics and Astrophysics. She was inducted into Sigma Pi Sigma (national Physics honorary), and completed two significant research projects while at Randolph-Macon. As a Schapiro Undergraduate Research Fellow (SURF), Sherie studied the possibility that Earth's gravitational influence might be partially responsible for the selective heavy cratering observed on the lunar near side. Her senior project research applied the technique of Matrix Lightcurve Inversion to the analysis of stellar photometry. She generated model images of several stars suspected of having significant starspot activity. Sherie currently works for the U.S. Army.

Class of 1997

Robert D. Lewis, Summa Cum Laude (that's 4.0 for all courses completed at Randolph-Macon for all four years!), received the degree Bachelor of Science, with a double major in Physics and Religious Studies and a minor in Astrophysics. His senior project was to write an adult Sunday school curriculum, entitled Is there a God in Spacetime? which incorporates contemporary cosmology and physics. He also did SURF research on Matrix Lightcurve Inversion. Robert is married to Rachel Mae Downs (R-MC '97, Magna Cum Laude). Robert Lewis and Rachel Downs-Lewis attend Duke Divinity School, and plan to seek ordination. Robert is currently pastor of Cherry Hill and Mount Cana United Methodist Churches, in South Boston, Virginia.

Christopher A. St. Jean, Magna Cum Laude (3.75+ for all four years), received his Bachelor of Science with a double major in Physics and Mathematics, with a minor in Religious Studies. He did not participate in SURF here, opting instead for a summer REU program at the University of Virginia. Chris did graduate work at the University of Virginia, where he completed a master's degree in electrical engineering (which is really just applied physics - except it pays better!). At last word, he was being better paid while working for TRW, Inc.

Seth D. Green, Cum Laude (3.5+ for four years!), received his Bachelor of Science, with a double major in Physics and History and a minor in Astrophysics. His senior project and SURF research was a comparative study of the Great Red Spot on Jupiter and the Bermuda High often found in the summer on planet Earth. Seth also works at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren, Virginia, where he originally claimed that his job title was rocket scientist. He is also pursuing part time a graduate degree in meteorology at the University of Maryland.

Class of 1995

Gretchen Ann Spiegel graduated in 1995, and was the first of our recent alumni to work at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, where her job title is, appropriately, physicist.

Class of 1994

Avi Joshua Shapiro ('94) graduated with a Bachelor of Science in physics, with a minor in psychology. He subsequently earned his MSEd in psychology and counseling at the University of Pennsylvania, in 1995. Avi is now a physics teacher in the Fairfax County Public School system.

Before 1994

Dr. Michael A. Keegan- affectionately known as Mak - graduated in 1990. His senior project research involved fabrication and characterization of high Tc superconductors, including a study of how their characteristics change when irradiated by a high neutron flux. He earned an MS in Applied and Engineering Physics in 1992, and completed his Ph.D. in Computational Physics in 1999, both at George Mason University. Mak is currently Staff Technologist at TRW, Inc.
