Designed to provide the student with entry-level skills and the
knowledge base for such professional directions as music recording,
music publishing, and music management. The courses fall into several
areas: studio, legal issues, musicology, management, ensemble, internship,
and the capstone.
Studio (3 credits)
MUSC 280 - Introduction to Recording Techniques
This course serves as an introduction to the fundamentals of sound
recording and production. Students will study the properties of
sound, analogue and digital recording, and the microphone use. The
course includes hands-on recording projects and the creation of
multi-track recordings.
Legal Issues (3 credits)
MUSC 320 - Defining and Defending Music
A study of the institution that protect and promote musical creativity.
Topics include copyright, censorship, music unions, concert organizations,
music patronage. This course is presented from a historical perspective
with an emphasis on American developments past and present.
Musicology (3 credits)
MUSC 381 - Special Topics in Music - Genre Study
This course concentrates on a specific music genre (such as the
symphony, solo song, string quartet, jazz trio) and explores it
from several different perspectives. Students acquire an understanding
of the genre's transformations throughout history. Topics vary from
year to year.
