MUSC 110 - Fundamentals of Music I (3 credits)
This course is open to all students and is the introductory course for the music major and minor. Students will develop personal music skills in the fundamentals of notation, theory, and keyboard, while exploring the philosophical nature of music.
MUSC 111 - Fundamentals of Music II (3 credits)
This course integrates the study of music's role in world societies with the development of intermediate theoretical skills in analysis, keyboard, and composition.
MUSC 210 - Fundamentals of Music III (3 credits)
This course focuses on music in Western society from antiquity to Beethoven and builds upon the musical skills cultivated in Fundamentals I and II. Students will develop intermediate to advanced analytical skills as they explore the music's historical context. Topics include late Renaissance polyphony and eighteenth-century two-voice counterpoint, along with a broadening of eartraining, sightsinging, and keyboard proficiencies.
MUSC 211 - Fundamentals of Music IV (3 credits)
This course focuses on Western music from the early nineteenth century to the contemporary period and integrates advanced analytical and compositional skills with a study of the music's historical context. Topics include chromatic harmony, altered chords, serial techniques, and neo-romanticism.
MUSC 270 - Introduction to Music Technology (3 credits)
This course offers an introduction to the current technological applications in music creation and re-creation. Focus will be on the understanding of the concept of MIDI (musical instrument digital interface) and specific study of the Finale notation and Cakewalk sequencing programs. Students will create compositions utilizing these programs.
Ensemble/Applied Study - (3 credits)
Students acquire this credit through participation in a vocal ensemble (Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, Jazz Vocal Ensemle) or through private lessons in voice, piano, or organ.
