Introduction:
~The teacher will read the story, "Fire! Fire!", by Gail Gibbons. Following the story, the teacher will discuss the importance of firefighters in the community.
Body:
The teacher will pass out a paper plate, construction paper arrows, and a brad to every child. The teacher will assist the students in fastening the arrows and the brad into place in the middle of the plate. Then the teacher will show students how to write numbers on their plate to make their own clock. The teacher will walk around the class making sure the students are placing the numbers in the correct place, paying close attention that the students write 12, 3, 6, and 9 first, making it easier to place the remaining numbers. Once each student has made their clock, the teacher will have students demonstrate time on their plates/ clocks. The teacher will say, "Please show me what time it was on your clock if the fire began at 3:00". The students will hold up their clocks showing 3:00 for the time of the fire. This will continue until the students feel comfortable with time.
Closure:
~Students will sing song: (Sung to tune of "I'm a Little Teapot"), doing the motions with the song. "I'm a little firefighter on the go. (move arms in running motion) Here is my helmet, (point to your head) Here is my hose. (hold an imaginary hose) When I see a fire, (Look, holding your hand over your eyes) Hear me shout, (Cup your hands over your mouth) Turn on the water, (Hold an imaginary hose) and put the fire out! Shhhhhh!" (Pretend to spray a fire with a hose)
