One way to make this subject come alive in your classroom is to create an interactive bulletin board for your students to use.  The activity can be used during center time, or for an enrichment activity for those who finish other class work early.  Here is one suggestion for such a bulletin board:

The purpose of this bulletin board is for students to match the community helper with his or her mode of transportation.  On the left side of the bulletin board, place pictures of different community helpers.  On the right hand side, place pictures of the community helpers' modes of transportation.  Be sure that the pictures on the left and the pictures on the right are in a different order.  Tie a piece of yarn to pins placed next to each community helper.  Next to each mode of transportation, place another pin.  Student using the bulletin board can wrap the string from a community helper around the pin next to the correct mode of transportation.  Be sure to have an answer key near by for self-checking!

(Hint: When creating materials for the board, make the community helpers separate from their hats.  This way, if you wish to change the board later, you can simply add new hats and new vehicles!)
