April's Sample Lesson

Title: Fire Hats Galore

Grade Level: Kindergarten

SOL's Addressed:  Social Studies K.5, Art K.3, Art K.4

Approximate Time Needed: 30 minutes

Objectives:

~Students will be able to identify a firefighter's hat by examining a real fire hat and discussing its purposes.

~ After discussing a real firefighter's hat, students will create their own fire hat by using materials provided.

Materials:

~Red construction paper

~ Black magic marker (for number)

~ Scissors

Introduction:

~Possibly borrow a real fire hat from a firehouse and during a circle-time present it to the children. They should feel free to touch the hat and try it on. It will give the students a great chance to see and feel what a real fire hate is like. This activity could be done as an introduction of a field trip to the firehouse. Explain to the children that before visiting the firehouse they must make a hat that looks like the ones the firemen will be wearing when they arrive at the firehouse. Everyone should want to look like the firemen they will see at the firehouse and to do so they are to make their very own fire hats.

Body:

~Before sending the children to their seats to begin working on their fire hats discuss the uses for the fire hat, the different types that exist, and all of their aspects.

~ Review some things previously learned about firemen, what they do, and their way of life.

~ Explain to the students that when they visit the firehouse they will see hats just like the ones they are going to make, but they will not be made of paper. Possibly discuss why the hats that the real firemen have are not made of paper.

~ Demonstrate for the children the way that they will cut and make the hat while they are still in circle-time to make sure that everyone is watching and paying attention. Possibly have the line on the construction paper pre-drawn or have a pattern for the students to follow when cutting out the circle in the middle of their hat (it should actually be a half circle so that the one portion can be flipped up to write their "fire number" on).

~ Supervise the students as they cut their hat to make sure they are not cutting a full circle. When they are finished cutting help them, if help is needed, to write their "fire number" on the hat and flip that part up.

~ Try it on to make sure it fits.

Closure:

~When it is time to go to the firehouse make sure everyone has their fire hat and discuss them briefly. Once again you might want to talk about the differences between their hat and the real ones they will shortly see.

Evaluation:

~The teacher can see if the children understand the creation of their own fire hats by examining them to make sure everything is in place and it is made correctly.

~ The teacher will be able to identify the level of understanding about real fire hates once the students arrive at the firehouse and the firefighters question their prior knowledge about fire hats. Since the students have just learned about fire hats that day the information should be fresh in their minds and their participation level should be fairly high.
