Daniel
McCaffrey
Daniel V. McCaffrey, a native of Bergenfield, NJ, is a graduate
of Regis High School in New York City. He took a Classics major
and received the Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude, in cursu
honorum, from Fordham University, where he was elected to membership
in Phi Beta Kappa in 1968. After attending The Pennsylvania State
University for one year of graduate school, he transferred to The
University of Michigan where he received the Ph.D. degree in Classical
Studies in 1974.
He taught at Hope College in Holland, Michigan for one year before
coming to Randolph-Macon College in 1975. He has taught in the classics
department since 1975 and chaired that department from 1976-1982.
He served the college in several different capacities on numerous
committees and boards. He has been chair of the college assessment
group, the committee on admissions, credits and academic status
of students, the committee on resources and planning. He served
on the steering committee of the 1997 SACS self-study.
He has long been interested in resurrecting ancient texts by directing,
producing and, in one case, translating Greek and Roman comedies
for live performance in English. His other love is the application
of computer technology, computational linguistics and cognitive
science to the theory, practice and teaching of Latin reading.
