Summary: Gaius Julius Caesar
Gaius Julius Caesar, most commonly known as Julius Caesar, was born
in 100 B.C. While he was born into an upperclass Patrician family,
his family was not prominent. Caesar benefited from his good family
connections, specifically two high ranking uncles. He used these
family connections as a springboard for his political career as
a lawyer, orator, and Quaestor. Before entering into the political
world in 77 B.C., he marries Cinna's daughter Cornelia in 84 B.C.
During his duration as a Quaestor in 69 B.C. he suffers the loss
of his wife Cornelia and his aunt Julia. He speaks at their funerals
and uses this as a stage for professing his views to the people.
Caesar's relationship with Egypt begins when he goes to Egypt to
pursue his rival for power, Pompey. Caesar was greatly disappointed
when he is presented with Pompey's head and not given the chance
to kill Pompey himself. With Pompey out of the picture, Caesar is
officially named Dictator of Rome. He makes the decision to remain
in Alexandria to collect debts owed to him by Ptolemy XII. During
this stay he meets Cleopatra. Cleopatra and her brother Ptolemy
XIII are ordered to see Caesar and after spending the evening with
Caesar, Cleopatra is able to convince Caesar to place her is the
position of power with Caesar's stipulation that she marry her brother
to unite Egypt. With the death of Ptolemy XII, Cleopatra becomes
the primary ruler of Egypt. It is said that Caesar and Cleopatra
spoke of using their power and confidence to take over the rest
of the world and rule it as partners. Caesar returns to Rome only
to encounter his many political enemies. He continues his military
campaigns that serve as proof to the Senate that Caesar does not
care about Rome. His return to Rome results in his murder by the
conspirators, Brutus and Cassius.
