BLST 160 and BLST 260
Ghana, home of the Asante kingdom and land of gold, but also one of the showcases of cosmopolitan Africa, is the destination of our travel course for 6 credits, distributed over two courses, one focusing on African Culture & Psychology (BLST/PSYC 160), the other on Health, Healing and Gender in this African country (SOCI 360). Ghana is located in the heart of the Gulf of Guinea on the coast of West Africa.
We will spend two weeks learning about these topics through readings complemented by our exploration of Ghanaian society and culture through lectures, discussions, and trips to a variety of locations including museums, markets, healers' practices, hospitals.
The Psychology course will provide you with an opportunity to learn about the theories and methodologies of cross-cultural psychology, to explore the ways in which culture affects our beliefs and behaviors and to address broader questions of universals and particulars in human behavior.
The Sociology course will explore the role of traditional medicine in health care delivery; the roles of international organizations in health and their activities in global and Ghanaian health development; While doing so, it will highlight the role played by gender in each of these areas as well as the impact of gender on health.
More than anything, these two courses are a wonderful opportunity for you to engage in cross-cultural scholarship, to experience the dynamism of African cultures, and to learn about yourself and your own culture, as you reflect on your daily experience of a different culture.
