African American Psychology
Course Description
This course is an introductory course in the study of psychology
from an African-American perspective. This course compares and contrasts
theories from a traditional European-centered approach and the Afrocentric
approach. These distinctively different approaches will be analyzed
according to their respective abilities to explain the life experiences,
cognition, and behaviors of African-Americans. Topics to be covered
include: black identity development, racism, cultural bias in psychological
testing, Black behaviorism, Black self-hatred, the history of Black
psychology, and the mental health of AfricanAmericans. Prerequisite:
PSYC 200. Offered alternate years.
