Parents FAQ: Counseling
What kind of counseling services are available?
Randolph-Macon College's Counseling Services offers personal counseling to all students. Counseling services include short-term individual counseling, group counseling, consultation, and referral services when deemed appropriate or preferred by the student. The Center also offers educational workshops on topics such as coping with stress, overcoming test anxiety, and perfectionism.
How does my student make an appointment?
Appointments can be made by visiting the Center, or by calling 804.752.7270 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. All appointments are completely confidential. Appointments are typically given within 48 hours of request.
Are there fees for services?
Counseling services are free to all enrolled R-MC students.
If we have a concern about our student can we consult with a counselor?
Any of our counselors will be glad to consult with parents about a student concern.
Can a counselor tell me if they are working with my student?
All counseling is kept completely confidential. With written permission/consent from the student a counselor, however, can acknowledge they are working with your student and can confer with you.
What is the training of the counselors on staff?
The Center's clinical staff are all licensed and follow the legal and ethical guidelines of the American Psychological Association and the American Counseling Association for professional behavior and confidentiality. Dr. Craig Anderson, Dr. Mary Polce-Lynch, and Dr. Beth Schubert provide counseling at the Center.
Who do I contact if my student is in crisis?
Call the Center (804.752.7270) during office hours (8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) and ask to speak with one of the counselors. Contact Campus Safety (804.752.4710) for urgent after-hours mental health needs and ask to speak with the counselor on call. It the situation needs an immediate emergency response, please convey this to Campus Safety and they can coordinate a response with local emergency services.
