Q. Where is Ashland located?
A. Ashland is located 15 miles from downtown Richmond, the
Virginia state capital; 90 miles south of Washington, D.C.; 90 miles
west of Virginia Beach, VA, and 60 miles east of the Blue Ridge
Mountains.
The campus is ideally located for educational, cultural, and recreational
opportunities.
Q. We know that R-MC is located near the center
of the town of Ashland. What is the town like and what does it have
to offer students at R-MC?
A. Ashland is a small, friendly town of about 6,000, a suburb
of Richmond located in historic Hanover County, home of Patrick
Henry. Within a three block walk from the campus, students have
access to three shopping centers, nine churches, five banks, four
automobile service stations, four convenience stores, the Ashland
Public Library and a variety of restaurants.
Local shops include some clothing stores, drug stores, jewelry
stores, supermarkets, gift shops, discount stores, hardware stores,
TV repair shops, barber and beauty shops, furniture stores, laundromats,
and laundry/dry cleaning establishments. The CSX railroad passes
through town, and AMTRAK trains stop daily at the Ashland station
adjacent to the campus.
Ashland has two medical centers, a number of physicians, dentists,
gynecologists, an orthopedist, two optometrists, and a pastoral
counseling center. The Ashland Volunteer Rescue Squad, located two
blocks from campus, is considered among the best equipped and best
trained volunteer squads in Virginia. The Fire Department is also
located two blocks away, and many of our students volunteer their
services with both organizations.
Several motels are available nearby for friends and family who
wish to stay overnight. A weekly newspaper and two local radio stations
serve the Ashland area, in addition to a daily newspaper, more than
a dozen radio stations, and four television stations in Richmond.
Shopping is available at two malls in Ashland, In addition, a large
mall (Virginia Center Commons) with major department stores is located
about 6 miles south on U.S. Highway 1. Another major mall - Short
Pump Town Center - is an easy 25-30 minute drive from campus in
the West End of Richmond.
