Sore Throat (Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis)
- Symptoms: Sore throat, fever (not always), lymphnode in the neck, drainage in the throat
- Testing: Rapid strep test **this tests for the most common strain of strep (Group A). If your rapid strep test is negative you may need a culture to screen for other strains of strep throat.
- Treatment: if you have strep throat (a bacterial infection) antibiotics are given. Often sore throats can be viral and supportive therapy only is indicated (tylenol, cough drops/lozenges, hydration, etc).
If you are experiencing these symptoms make an appointment to see the Student Health Center 804-752-3041.
