General Guidelines for Faculty Grants
2013-2014

1. The recipients of faculty grants and awards are nominated by the Committee on Faculty Development and the awards are approved by the Provost and administered by the Provost's Office.
   
   
2. No grant or award under any given program will be made in a given year if no proposal received that year is deemed sufficiently meritorious.
   
   
3. All grants and awards will be made on the basis of the merit of the proposal, without regard to quotas of distribution among departments or disciplines.
   
   
4. In evaluating proposals, the quality of work accomplished under any previous faculty grant or award will be an important consideration. If the applicant has received a faculty grant or award in the last four years, a brief summary of the project (including presentations/publications which developed from the grant) should be submitted with the current proposal.
   
   
5. Any funds remaining after a given grant or award has expired shall revert to the fund used to support that grant or award.
   
   
6. If a grant recipient leaves the employment of the College during the term of the grant or award, any unused funds shall revert to the fund used to support that grant or award.
   
   
7. Publications, exhibitions, presentations, or subsequent proposals for outside funding resulting from work undertaken under any grant or award must acknowledge the support of that grant or award.
   
   
8. Submission of proposals to outside funding agencies does not affect the eligibility for any grant or award. An award of outside funding, however, must be reported to the Committee on Faculty Development, and the Committee reserves the right to adjust its recommendation accordingly.
   
   
9. A final report summarizing the project must be submitted to the Committee on Faculty Development within sixty days of the proposed date of completion.
   
   
10. No grant or award will be made which supports work leading to an advanced degree.
    
11. Proposals must be typed or printed and double-spaced and must adhere to the following format:
    

    Title Page – title, name, academic department, and date
    Abstract – a half-page abstract of the proposal
    Background – a review of current work on the proposed topic
    Objectives – goals to be achieved by the project
    Methodology – techniques to be used in carrying out and evaluating the project
    Significance – how the project will advance the discipline or improve teaching
    Budget – a detailed, itemized list of requested items
    Timetable – a schedule of completion dates for each phase of the project
    Justification – a description of the potential of the project to further the applicant’s professional growth
    Previous Work – a brief summary of work done under previous faculty grants (see #4) 
    Other Support  - an itemization of other institutional or material support that this project will or may receive

12. Eligible expenses normally include only specialized research materials, capital items (pieces of equipment which exceed $500 in value and have a useful life of at least two years), inexpensive equipment, supplies, travel costs related to research, and clerical expenses.  Only the Chenery program makes provision for the funding of research assistants.  Computer hardware is not eligible unless the hardware is essential to the success of the proposal. Capital items will become the property of the College at the conclusion of the grant period.
    
    
13. The College allowance for travel by automobile is $0.40 per mile, and photocopying at Randolph-Macon is $0.05 per 8 ½" x 11" page.
