Locating Articles (Databases & Indexes)
SciFinder Scholar (1907-present for CAplus; dates vary for other databases)
Key index in field of Chemistry. Includes 6 databases -CAplus, Registry, CASREACT, and Medline; available on one computer across from the reference desk as well as in the science building. Limited number of simultaneous users; if ports are full, try again later.
ACS Publications (full text; dates vary; current issues and complete archives)
Journals published and distributed by the American Chemical Society
Academic Search Complete
OmniFile Full Text Mega (some full text; 1994 to present)
Articles from scholarly and popular sources in all disciplines. Select a subject area "Applied Science & Technology" at the bottom of the search screen to get the most relevant results.
Finding Patents
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has a database of all U.S. patents issued since 1790. Issued Patents (PatFT) includes all approved patents. This is full-text searchable for patents issued from 1976 to present. Patents issued from 1790-1975 are searchable only by patent number and current US classifications. Published Applications (AppFT) includes patent applications dated from 2001+, and is full-text searchable. Make sure and read the help files carefully for instructions on proper searching, or you may fail to locate existing patents!
