Sample Critique Peer Review

- Does the opening paragraph provide an introduction to the thesis of article, and is the author’s thesis accurately stated in the opening?
- Are the title and author mentioned in the opening paragraph?
- What suggestions do you have for improving the opening?
- Look for topic sentences in each paragraph. Point out paragraphs that do not have effective sentences or where a transition sentence is needed.
- What are the main points the writer summarizes? Do these points give a good overview of the most significant points of the author’s?
- Are there points where the writer goes into too much detail? Not enough detail? Note places in the margins where the writer needs to clarify an idea, provide an example to make the point more clearly, or delete extraneous material.
- Does the writer find 3-4 strengths and weaknesses with the essay? What are they?
- Do you think these points are convincing? Which ones are strong and which are weak?
- Does the conclusion tie together the summary and critique in an effective way? If not, does the conclusion work anyway?
- Has the writer followed the syllabus and MLA guidelines for formatting a paper including the correct draft number, proper citations in the places needed, and pagination? Make margin notes where needed.
- Do you have any additional compliments, remarks, or suggestions about the effectiveness of the paper?
