Year Three

Third-Year Expectations

By the end of Junior year, students should have a clear focus of what they will do after graduation.

Goal:
To gain experience in and exposure to various occupational fields which will lead to the choice of a specific career field.

School-Year Activities:

Basics of Personal Growth:

• Get good grades!
• Become involved as a leader of campus clubs or organizations that will enhance personal development.
• Upgrade computer skills as software changes are released.
• Create a personal web page, as a way of learning and applying HTML.
  

Basics of Academic Development:

• Prepare internship application materials (resume, letters of recommendations, etc.).
• Register for January term internship.
• Conduct supervised research project in your major/minor.
• Apply for, and take part in, a Study Abroad experience.
• Enroll in computer intensive class, if not already done so.

Basics of Career Development:

• Conduct research on selected careers.
• Attend a Career Symposium.
• Establish a career network by utilizing the On-line Community.
• Discuss long-term plans with faculty advisor and/or Career staff.
• Attend a Resume Writing Workshop.
• Evaluate options and select an appropriate career field.
• Determine whether career goals require an advanced degree.
• Master one additional specific major computer application, i.e. database, spreadsheet, HTML, etc.
• Make plans during your junior or senior year to take the Tek.Xam which will credential you as a liberal arts student in the use of computer technology.
• Secure summer employment which expands your technology skill set.

If Graduate School:

• Attend Graduate School Orientation plus appropriate interest sessions.
• Discuss graduate programs with faculty advisor and/or Career staff.
• Think about appropriate faculty to provide recommendations.
• Secure program literature from graduate school programs of interest.
• Attend graduate and professional school fairs to gather information on schools and programs.
• Explore scholarship, fellowship and assistantship opportunities for financing grad study.
• Register to take appropriate graduate school admissions' examinations.

Summer Activities

• Secure summer job or internship in your career field.
• Develop appropriate professional skills in your chosen career.
• Cultivate and expand your career network.
• Plan for your personal transportation needs upon graduation. (Do you need to buy a car?)
• Visit potential graduate schools and interview faculty and students.
