Recruiters
Recruiters are paid by hiring companies to find individuals
for key positions. Although you are not their key client, it is
still good to establish a good relationship with a recruiter as
it can help you in your networking. Recruiters don't give advice
on how to manage or change your career. Their primary job is to
find the right match between an employer and a job candidate.
Employment Agencies
Employment Agencies provide services for people who
are new to the workforce and also to those who are experienced.
They don't have positions for everything that is available so it
is good to use employment agencies only as one way to find a job.
Employment Agencies do charge a fee that is paid either by the job
seeker (you) or the hiring employer. Do not ever sign a contract
with an Employment Agency granting them 'exclusive handling' of
your job search. (This would be on the application form). If you
do sign this exclusivity agreement, you could have to pay them a
fee even if you find a job on your own. A survey by the Federal
Trade Commission indicated that the average placement rate for employment
agencies was only 5% of those who walked in the front door.
