Joining Student Organizations
One of the best ways to see if you will like working in a certain field is to volunteer! Even though you probably won't be working in THE position you want in the future, volunteering is a great way to investigate and explore a field. You can usually find volunteer opportunities to meet your interests as well as your time demands. There are volunteer opportunities that are short (1 day) or long (regular times for a year or more).
Volunteering is another way to gain skills that you can highlight on your resume. Virtually all volunteering experiences help you gain skills in:
- working as a team
- time management
- verbal communication
- initiative
- flexibility
- creativity
Employers look favorably at resumes which show that students have taken the initiative to develop their skills as well as contribute to their community. If you and another candidate have the same skills, background and education, showing volunteer experience on your resume will give you a definite advantage!
