Houston Sends Roanoke Past Randolph-Macon 2-1
SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke College and Randolph-Macon College opened ODAC play in Salem on Wednesday evening with the Maroons defeating the visiting Yellow Jackets, 2-1. Roanoke improves to 5-1 overall, 1-0 in the ODAC, while Randolph-Macon falls to 2-3, 0-1.
Sophomore forward Margaret Houston provided the scoring punch for the Maroons, notching her second and third goals of the season in the victory. She opened the scoring in the game’s 29th minute off a deflection on a shot by teammate Meredith Grunewald. Houston struck the resulting volley first time, beating the keeper near post.
Ashley Malinowski evened the score in the 38th minute for R-MC. Lacy Phelps collected a central slip pass from a midfield player and sent a shot past RC keeper Erin Hanson, but the shot careened off the inside of the near post right into Malinowski’s path on the opposite side of the six-yard box. She coolly deposited the ball into the back of the net.
Houston benefited directly from Grunewald again in the 64th minute. Grunewald serviced the ball across the net to the far post where Houston lay waiting to strike it into the back of the net.
Randolph-Macon returns to the pitch on Saturday, September 15. The Yellow Jackets host ODAC foe Washington & Lee University at 3:00 p.m. in Ashland.
