Phelps’ Overtime Strike Sends Randolph-Macon past Lees-McRae 2-1
ASHLAND, VA – Lacy Phelps’ goal in the 93rd minute lifted the Randolph-Macon College Women’s Soccer team to a 2-1, come from behind, overtime victory over Division II Lees-McRae Sunday afternoon in Ashland. The win improves R-MC’s record to 1-0-0 on the season while Lees-McRae drops to 0-3-0 on the young season.
Trailing 1-0 at half-time, Ashley Malinowski evened the match at 1-1 in the 63rd minute of play when she took a pass from Sarah Duncan and beat the Bobcat keeper.
After regulation finished without any further scoring, Phelps capitalized after Brittany Jones sent a shot in that was initially saved, but Phelps collected the ball and scored to give R-MC the win.
Lees-McRae out shot R-MC 19-17 while the Jackets held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks. Mary Jocelyn made 10 saves in net for R-MC while Brittany Bolton made nine saves for the Bobcats.
Randolph-Macon is back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Goucher for a 4:00 p.m. match.
