Villa Julie Holds on for 10-9 Victory over R-MC Women's Lacrosse
ASHLAND, VA – Lacy Phelps and Erin Clare Cassidy netted three goals a-piece but it wasn’t enough for the Yellow Jackets to stop Villa Julie, losing 10-9 in out-of-conference play on Saturday afternoon.
Villa Julie (2-1) came out on fire, controlling the tempo of the game and scoring the first 5 goals of the match against Randolph-Macon (0-2). It wasn’t until 11 minutes into the game that Phelps found the back of the net from an assist from Kelly Cramer for the Yellow Jackets. The game remained scoreless for the next 10 minutes thanks to a serious of saves by Jackets keeper Lindsay Shabert.
Then with 4:02 left in the first half, a crucial caused turnover by Stephanie Serena resulted in an unassisted goal by the R-MC freshman, closing the gap, 5-2. However, Villa Julie fought back and answered with 1:07 left in the first half by a goal from Lauren Zegowitz, finishing it out with a score of 6-2.
The second half opened up with two quick goals by VJ in the first two minutes, putting the Mustangs up by six scores.
The Yellow Jackets scored five unanswered goals to bridge the gap and bring the score within one with 16 minutes remaining in the game. Villa Julie responded with a pair of strikes; one from a free position shot from Julie Olson and another by an unassisted goal from Zegowitz.
However, R-MC’s strong defense held them to an intense second half and a perfect transition found Emily Kent open in the attack to score with only 5:45 remaining in the game, putting the Jackets down by only two.
After losing the draw control, R-MC found themselves once again relying on leaders in their defense, such as Logan Pomeroy and Jen Green, to retain possession and get the ball back down the field. This is when they found sharp shooter Cassidy open near the net to score her third goal of the game with 36 seconds left to go, bringing the Yellow Jackets within one.
After the ensuing face-off, R-MC was caught off-sides, thereby giving the Mustangs the ball back and the chance to run out the clock.
Randolph-Macon will play its first home game this Saturday, March 8th as they take on 12th ranked State University of New York Cortland at 2pm.
