ASHLAND, VA – Kaitlin Quigley and Meghan Harkey each scored five goals as the duo helped Christopher Newport University score a 15-11 non-conference victory over home standing Randolph-Macon College on Thursday afternoon.
With the score 1-1, back-to-back goals by R-MC’s Alex Wright and Emily Kent gave R-MC an early 3-1 advantage with 18:27 left in the first-half.
Quigley sparked what proved to be a 6-0 run by the Captains with a goal at the 16:28 mark of the first half. Harkey capped the run with a tally with seven minutes left, making the score 7-3 in favor of CNU.
After Morgan Hutchinson and Erin Clare Cassidy scored to make it 7-5, CNU extended the lead to three once again before Cassidy sent R-MC to the intermission down 9-6 on a goal with 42 seconds remaining.
Christopher Newport came out and scored four of the first five goals of the second half to push its lead to 13-7 before Wright, Kent and Lacy Phelps scored to close the gap to 13-10 with 12:05 to go in the game.
That would be as close as the Jackets would get as Natalie Gilbert scored twice down the stretch to seal the win for CNU.
Phelps, Cassidy, Hutchinson, Kent and Wright all had two goals on the afternoon and Lindsay Schabert made four stops in net for R-MC.
The Yellow Jackets will be back in action on Saturday when it welcomes Guilford College to Ashland for a 2:00 ODAC game.
