No. 14 R-MC Rallies for 55-49 Victory Behind 21 Points from Hiltunen
PHOENIX, AZ – Randolph-Macon College’s Amanda Hiltunen scored a game-high 21 points as she helped the 14th ranked Yellow Jackets to a 55-49, come from behind victory over Marymount University in the first day of the Grand Canyon Classic in Phoenix, Arizona.
R-MC (6-0) also got 15 points and 11 rebounds from Molly Ariail in the win. R-MC made 21-of-64 (32.8 %) shots on the afternoon while making 11-of-14 free-throw attempts. Hiltunen and Lindsay Riesbeck each pulled down seven rebounds in the win for R-MC.
The Jackets trailed 47-36 after MU’s Stephanie Witko made a lay up with 7:33 remaining in the game. R-MC chipped away and pulled within one at 49-48 after Ariail converted a pair of free throws. Hiltunen then put the Yellow Jackets on top for good on a lay up with 1:53 remaining, making the score 50-49.
After a defensive stop, Hiltunen gave R-MC some breathing room with a three-pointer with 23 seconds left that extended the lead to four. She then she hit a pair of foul shots with 13 seconds remaining to ice the win.
Marymount (7-1) was led by Kathleen Brown who had 19 points while Kathryn Wilson had 12 points in a losing effort.
The Yellow Jackets will conclude their play in the tournament when they take on Villa Julie at 12:00 Pacific Time On Sunday afternoon.
