No. 23 Yellow Jackets Knock Off Vassar 70-42 in Mt. Aloysius Tip Off Championship
CRESSON, PA – No. 23 Randolph-Macon College got a game-high 16 points from Amanda Hiltunen as the Yellow Jackets went on to a 70-42 victory over Vassar College Sunday afternoon in the championship game of the Mt Aloysius Coaches vs. Cancer Tip-Off Tournament.
Joining Hiltunen in the scoring lead was Molly Ariail who notched 13 points and pulled down a team high six rebounds in the win. Lindsey Riesbeck also had 12 points in the victory while Nicole Childress added nine points and Renee Stein and Stephanie Grune each had eight points. R-MC recorded 22 assists on 30 made baskets, including a game high five helpers from Marta Merkel.
Leading 8-2 with 13:41 left in the first half, R-MC (2-0) went on a 15-4 run and went up by 17 points when Grune made a lay up with 7:52 left. The Yellow Jackets built on their lead when Ariail’s bucket with 5:51 left to go made the score 31-9 in favor of R-MC. A jumper by Stein with 38 second remaining in the half sent R-MC into the locker room with a 40-15 lead at intermission.
R-MC’s lead grew early in the second half, reaching as many as 38 points when Childress knocked down a jumper with just over 13 minutes left in the contest.
The R-MC defense only allowed Vassar to convert on 15-of-67 (22.4%) shots on the afternoon, including just 5-of-35 (14.3%) in the first half. The Jackets also forced 23 turnovers, including four steals by Hiltunen.
Vassar (1-1) was led by Elise Okusami and Emily Haeuser who had 12 and 10 points, respectively on the afternoon. Haeuser also grabbed a game high 12 board in a losing effort.
Randolph-Macon will be off until November 27 when it opens up ODAC play at home against the Royals of Eastern Mennonite at 7:00 p.m.
