Virginia Wesleyan Wins Defensive Battle 48-43 over No. 12 Randolph-Macon
ASHLAND, VA – Virginia Wesleyan College got 16 points from Tonia Jones as the Marlins topped No. 12 Randolph-Macon College 48-43 in ODAC Women’s Basketball action Saturday afternoon in Ashland.
The Marlins built a 14-3 lead when Alison Wheeler made a lay up with 8:10 remaining. That would prove to be VWC’s last basket of the half as the Yellow Jackets finished on a 10-0 run that was capped off by a Molly Ariail basket with a 1:10 to go. The two teams combined to make just 11-of-66 shots in the first stanza.
In the second-half, neither team scored for the first four minutes, before R-MC’s Lindsay Riesbeck made a lay up to make the score 15-14 in favor of the Jackets with 16:03 left in the game.
Andrea Ushinski would put the Marlins back on top 17-15 with a three pointer on the ensuing possession. VWC held the lead for the remainder of the game but was not able to open up a sizeable advantage before the 3:32 mark when Jones knocked down a jumper and three pointer on back-to-back possessions to give the Marlins a 43-34 advantage.
Riesbeck and Amanda Hiltumen led R-MC with 11 points each while Ariail pulled down 11 rebounds. Heather Phillips grabbed a game-high 12 boards for VWC which out rebounded R-MC 55-38.
Randolph-Macon will return to action on Tuesday when it welcomes Washington and Lee to Ashland for a 7:00 p.m. ODAC game.
