ASHLAND, VA – Randolph-Macon College’s Molly Ariail led four Yellow Jackets in double figures with a game-high 18 points and she also pulled down 11 rebounds as R-MC topped visiting Eastern Mennonite University 75-61 Tuesday night.
The Jackets (3-0 / 1-0 ODAC), who are ranked 22nd in the nation in the latest D3hoops.com poll, also got double digit scoring performances from Amanda Hiltunen (16 points), Lindsay Riesbeck (15 points) and Jess Shifflett (13 points). R-MC shot 50.0% (29-of-58) from the floor for the game and made 12-of-16 free throws on the night.
EMU (1-2 / 0-1 ODAC) was paced by Lele Shumate and Ebony Dennis who each had a team best 11 points on the night while Jolene Kratz chipped in with 10 points in a losing effort. EMU shot 25-of-58 (43.1%) for the game but made only 4-of-17 shots from beyond the three point line.
The Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early lead, scoring 16 of the first 20 points of the game, taking a 16-4 advantage when Ariail made a lay up with 11:51 left in the first half. R-MC built on their lead and took a 20 point advantage when a bucket by Ariail with 4:31 left in the half made the score 37-17. R-MC would take a 41-25 lead into the locker room at intermission.
R-MC extended its lead to 21 at 48-27 when Shifflett made a lay up with 17:38 remaining in the game. EMU fought back, trimming the Jackets lead to 11 points when a Kratz bucket made the score 65-55 with 5:35 left, but back-to-back scores by Ariail and Hiltunen put the game out of reach at 70-55 with 4:18 to go.
Randolph-Macon will return to action on Friday night when it travels to Washington and Lee for a 7:00 p.m. ODAC game in Lexington, Virginia. Eastern Mennonite will play at cross town rival Bridgewater College Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
