Randolph-Macon Wins Yellow Jacket Invitational
Ashland, Va. - The Randolph-Macon women continued their winning ways on day two of the Yellow Jacket Invitational Saturday, picking up where they left off Friday night. R-MC took the win in both relays and in four out of six individual events on Saturday, while finishing out the meet with two new pool records and one new school record. The 400 freestyle relay team of Laura Belch, Lizzy Buckley, Marlene Graf, and Sarah Almond established a new pool record time of 3:46.50, while Lara O’Brien saved her best for last, winning the 1650 freestyle and setting new pool and school records of 18:19.09.
Saturday’s session began with the 200 medley relay, which was won by the R-MC foursome of Hallie Stewart, Kellianne Mullin, Shafer Busch, and Almond in 1:54.60. Radford was second in 1:56.80, and Millersville finished third in 1:59.88.
Alexis Butner then scored a victory for Radford in the 400 individual medley, taking control of the race early and going wire to wire to win in 4:49.34. R-MC freshmen Mullin (4:57.64) and O’Brien (5:01.04) finished second and third for the host Yellow Jackets.
The 200 backstroke featured a 1-2 sweep for Randolph-Macon, as junior teammates Stewart and Graf led the way. Stewart’s winning time was 2:15.11, while Graf was next best in 2:17.81. Radford freshman Whitney Friend finished third in 2:20.60.
The 100 freestyle was more of the same, as Randolph-Macon dominated the race, sweeping the top three spots. Freshmen Almond and Buckley repeated their finish places from the 50 freestyle on the previous night, with senior Belch in third. Almond’s winning time was 56.26, while Buckley and Belch finished in 56.48 and 56.84, respectively.
R-MC’s Mullin completed her sweep of the breaststroke events when she posted the top time of 2:32.96 in the 200 breaststroke, followed closely by Radford’s Butner in second with a 2:34.36. Millersville’s Courtney Wallace the third place finisher in 2:42.64.
Millersville University’s Brittany Neifert won her third individual event of the meet in the 200 butterfly, taking the win ahead of R-MC’s Corinne Campbell and Amie Mowery, also from Millersville. Neifert’s win secured her the top spot for the individual high point award competition.
In total, R-MC won all five relays and eight out of thirteen individual events in the two-day meet. R-MC swimmers also broke four pool records and one school record over the weekend. The Yellow Jackets totaled 690 points, swimming away from second place Millersville University (512.50) and third place Radford University (502.50) on the second day of competition.
