R-MC Softball Splits Season Opening Doubleheader with Villa Julie
(Game One Box Score) / (Game Two Box Score)
ASHLAND, VA – The Randolph-Macon College softball team opened up its 2008 campaign with a doubleheader split against visiting Villa Julie College, losing game one by the score of 4-2 but turning around and topping the Mustangs 4-2 in the night cap.
In that game two win, the Yellow Jackets broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom half of the sixth inning to take the lead and go onto the win. In the decisive inning, Paige Smith doubled to opening the inning and then moved to third on a single by Ashley Crouch. After a Meaghan Mauck fielder’s choice scored Smith and moved Crouch to third, VJC misplayed a ball hit by Shannon Long that allowed Crouch to score an insurance run for R-MC.
Becky Clark picked up the win for R-MC, tossing two innings of scoreless relief after Courtney Brooks went the first five innings for the Jackets in which she allowed two runs on eight hits and struck out three.
In the game one loss, the contest was scoreless through the first four and a half innings before R-MC pushed a run across when Morgan Greene singled home Casey Mauck to put R-MC up 1-0.
The Yellow Jackets' lead was short lived as VJC scored three times in their next at bat to go up 3-1. Randolph-Macon cut the Mustang advantage to 3-2 when Greene singled home Crouch in the sixth. That would be as close as R-MC would get as VJC tacked on a single run in the seventh to put the game away.
Randolph-Macon will return to action on Wednesday when it will host the University of Mary Washington in a 2:00 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
