ASHLAND, Va. – Randolph-Macon College will host contests in the first two rounds of the 2014 NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Championship.The Yellow Jackets received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament after a 20-6 campaign and the regular-season title in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) with a 14-2 league mark.
R-MC will face DeSales at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 7 in Crenshaw Gymnasium. The Bulldogs won the Freedom Conference Championship with a 73-64 overtime victory over Misericordia. DeSales is 18-9 overall and 10-4 in league play.
In Friday’s first game at 5:30 p.m., Mary Washington will meet Springfield. The Eagles won the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) title with a 65-48 victory over Christopher Newport to improve to 22-5. The Pride earned an at-large bid after falling 67-56 to MIT in the championship game of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). Springfield is 20-7 on the season.
Friday’s winners will meet in a second-round contest on Saturday, March 8 at 7 p.m.
This is the 23rd trip to the NCAA Tournament for the Yellow Jackets. R-MC had nine appearances in Division II (6-14 record) and 13 in Division III since 1990 (12-13). The Yellow Jackets are 18-27 overall in the NCAA Tournament. R-MC reached the Division II National Championship Game in 1977, falling to Chattanooga 71-62. The Yellow Jackets advanced to the Division III Final Four in 2010, the first year for head coach Nathan Davis.
R-MC is making its fifth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament, a first for the program. Davis is in his fifth season as head coach of his alma mater. He has a 7-4 record in NCAA Tournament contests and is tied for the program record for tourney wins by a head coach. Hal Nunnally was 7-13 in NCAA Tournament games, while Mike Rhoades was 3-4 and Paul Webb was 1-6.
This will be the first time that Davis has coached an NCAA Tournament contest on his home floor. The Yellow Jackets are 7-2 on neutral floors and 0-2 on the road under Davis in NCAA tourney play.
Randolph-Macon is 4-1 all-time against DeSales and 1-0 vs. the Bulldogs in the NCAA Tournament. R-MC topped DeSales 68-55 in the third round of the 2010 NCAA tourney. The Yellow Jackets are 11-2 against Mary Washington and have not faced the Eagles in the postseason. R-MC has never played against Springfield.
The Yellow Jackets are 2-2 this season against teams in this year’s field. R-MC defeated Dickinson and Virginia Wesleyan, both at home, while falling at Scranton and at Cabrini.
