Randolph-Macon College has announced four new members to its Board of Trustees. R-MC alumni Andrew K. “Drew” Maloney ’91 and Samuel E. “Skip” Vichness ’69, along with Frank and Patricia Bosse Gunther, began their terms during the Board’s October meeting.
R-MC President Robert R. Lindgren recognized the new Trustees as “outstanding members of the Randolph-Macon community.” He said, “We are indeed fortunate and grateful to have them join our Board. Their experience and leadership are wonderful additions to the Board, and they will enrich our discussions of important issues affecting the College’s future.”
Drew Maloney ’91 is the chief executive officer for the Washington, D.C.-based lobbying firm Ogilvy Government Relations, formerly known as the Federalist Group. He is active in the political and fund-raising operations of the National Republican Congressional Committee and the National Republican Senatorial Committee. His work with Republican leadership and legislative affairs has earned him a spot on the “Top Lobbyists” list in Washington, D.C., by The Hill newspaper.
Maloney’s experience on Capitol Hill includes service as administrative assistant and legislative director for House Majority Whip Tom Delay (R-TX). Maloney managed the Whip’s congressional office and played an intricate part in formulating the energy, judiciary, commerce and campaign finance reform policy initiatives. Maloney earned a B.A. in
political science from Randolph-Macon College in 1991 and a J.D. from Catholic University’s Columbus School of Law in 1996.
He and his wife, R-MC alumna Sabra Klein ’92, recently established the Sabra Klein Maloney ’92 Fellowship Program for Women in the Sciences, which is designed to support students who are interested in research opportunities in the lab sciences. Klein is an assistant professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland.
Samuel E. “Skip” Vichness ’69 has been a leader in the children’s summer camp industry for 35 years, as a camp director and investor. Currently, he is president of the management company, Quality Camping Properties, Inc., and senior partner in GreyPine, LLC, overseeing camping operations on both owned and rented sites, including day, resident and special-needs camps throughout the Northeastern United States. He is also chairman of the board of directors for the Foundation for Jewish Camp (FJC), which aims to unify the field of Jewish overnight camps and increase the number of children participating. In the past four years, the Foundation has raised over a hundred million dollars for the Jewish camping movement.
Vichness earned a B.A. in
history from Randolph-Macon College in 1969 and a Ph.D. in European history from Florida State University in 1972. He began his career as a European history professor with an emphasis in French Revolution and Napoleonic history. However, he retained a passion for camping through work as a camp counselor and decided to switch careers.
Vichness and his wife, Ilana, established the Gert and Jules Vichness Scholarship Fund at R-MC in 1996, which provides annual financial assistance to students based on need. In addition, they established the Vichness Israeli Study Fund, which assists R-MC students and faculty studying in Israel.
Frank Gunther and Patricia Bosse Gunther have served on
R-MC’s Parents Board for the past three years. In 2010, they were appointed to serve as co-chairs of the Board.
Frank Gunther is a partner with Waypoint Resources, LLC, a turnaround management and bankruptcy consulting firm. The Baltimore, Maryland firm works with under-performing companies on financial and operational restructuring, cash flow management and leadership effectiveness. Previously, Gunther served as vice president and general manager of Jarvis Steel & Lumber Company in Baltimore. He earned a B.A. in economics from Villanova University.
Patricia Bosse Gunther is vice president for advancement and marketing at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland. She led the college through a successful $34 million Legacy of Leadership Campaign. Bosse Gunther also served as vice president, mission and institutional advancement at Baltimore’s St. Joseph Medical Center/Catholic Health Initiatives and as vice president of St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation from 2005-09. While there, she led a successful $20 million campaign effort. Bosse Gunther earned a B.A. in English from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland.
