R-MC Men’s Soccer Nabs First Win with a 2-1 Result over Regional Rival Mary Washington
(Box Score)
ASHLAND, VA -- The Randolph-Macon men’s soccer team picked up its first win of the 2008 season on Wednesday with 2-1 home victory over regional rival Mary Washington.
R-MC (1-3-0) took the early lead 8:34 into the match when Mike Urbanik crossed over mid-field and launched a high arching shot that slipped past the out stretched out arms of UMW (2-2-0) keeper Emmett Rutkowski to give the Jackets a 1-0 advantage.
The Eagles got the equalizer in the 38th minute, after an R-MC foul just inside the UMW side of the field; Matt Lamb served a ball in the box from about 40 yards away that bounced over the head of Yellow Jackets’ keeper Matty Rocawich to tie the game.
The game remained that way until the 61st minute when Scot Landholt sent in Kevan Quinn on a give and go pass and Quinn was able to beat Rutkowski to give R-MC the game-winning goal.
Mary Washington applied pressure late, but Rocawich made Quinn’s goal stand up, making four saves to earn his first career win and shut out in net for the Jackets.
UMW out shot R-MC 12-6 and held a 3-2 advantage on corner kicks. Rutkowski made a pair of stops on the afternoon for the Eagles.
Randolph-Macon will be back in action on Saturday when it takes on Salisbury University at 4:00 p.m. in Ashland.
