Wheaton Halts R-MC Rally to Win 2-1 in Men’s Soccer Action
ASHLAND, VA – Wheaton College (Ma.) scored two second-half goals and held off a late rally from Randolph-Macon as the Lyons topped the Yellow Jackets 2-1 in the first match of the 2007 R-MC/Select Classic.
After a scoreless first-half that saw both teams combine for just five shots, Wheaton’s Yuri Moreira connected on the first-goal of the match in the 68th minute.
Wheaton doubled its advantage 2:37 later when Eric Driscoll found the back of the net after he gathered a ball that was batted around in the box following a set piece.
David Krukiel got the Jackets on the board in the 76th minute. Donald Parrott and Scott Landolt had the assists on Krukiel’s first career-goal. That would be as close as the Jackets got as they were forced to play a man down for the final six minutes of the match.
Wheaton held a 13-8 advantage in shots and a 9-1 edge in corner kicks. Chris Smart made two stops in goal for Wheaton while Jason DePre posted four saves for R-MC.
Randolph-Macon will return to action on Sunday when it will close out the tournament versus Illinois Wesleyan at 12:00 p.m. in Ashland.
In the tournament’s second match, Virginia Wesleyan scored a 2-1 decision over Illinois Wesleyan behind a pair of goals Brandon Massie.
With VWC leading 1-0, the Titans Jason Lopez used a left footed curl shot from well outside the box to even the game a 1-1. Massie struck for his second goal at the 66:53 mark, giving VWC its first win of the year.
The Marlins out shot IWC 16-4 and held a 10-0 corner kicks. Kyle Williams made one stop in goal for VWC while Win Fisher made nine stops for the Titans.
VWC will take on Wheaton at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday in Ashland.
