Randolph-Macon Men’s Soccer Tops Ill Wesleyan 3-2
Virginia Wesleyan knocks off Wheaton 4-1 to Take R-MC/Select Title
ASHLAND, VA – The Randolph-Macon men’s soccer upended visiting Ill. Wesleyan 3-2 in the final day of the 2007 R-MC/Select Classic held in Ashland. Virginia Wesleyan topped Wheaton (Ma.) 4-1 in the afternoon’s second game to take the tournament title.
After Jeff Carqueville put IWU up 1-0 at the 17:01 mark of the first half, the Yellow Jackets Scott Landolt scored his first goal of the season on a set piece following a Titan foul just outside the box. A David Krukiel goal on an assist from Peter Hanley in the 38th minute gave R-MC a 2-1 advantage at the break.
Carqueville scored the equalizer in the 68th minute after he took a head pass from Ikeena Odinaka and beat Jackets keeper Colin Royster to knot the game at 2-2.
The Yellow Jackets got the game-winning goal at the 75:30 mark when Landolt fed a ball to Brad Line who crossed a pass into the box that was headed home by Drew Wyatt for his first career goal.
Each team had 12 shots on the afternoon, while IWU held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Royster made two stops in net for R-MC while Win Fisher and Frankie Gorg split time in net making one and two saves, respectively.
Randolph-Macon will be back in action when it travels to the Virginia Wesleyan Invitational where it will take on Wesley at four on Saturday and Catholic at noon on Sunday.
In the second match of the day, the Marlins took the tournament championship scoring four unanswered goals after falling behind in the 32nd minute when Wheaton’s Reed Hollett headed home a corner kick off the foot of Dan Chong.
VWC scored just 55 seconds later when tournament Most Outstanding Player Bradon Massie set up a Harrison Mydral header off a set piece. A Kelvin Sealy unassisted strike just under two minutes later put the Marlins up for good 2-1.
Mike Over and Ryan Harkin added goals in the 52nd and 71st minutes, respectively to pad Virginia Wesleyan’s lead. VWC out shot Wheaton 16-5 and held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks. Kyle Williams played just over 75 minutes in net for VWC, making two stops while Cole Davidson made four stops for the Lyons.
Joining Massie on the all-tournament team was his teammates Travis Cober, ,Mike Karr and Dustin Skees. Wheaton was represented by Eric Driscoll, Josh Solomon and Yuri Moreira. Kevan Quinn and David Kukiel were chosen from R-MC while Jason Lopez from Ill. Wesleyan was included as well.
