Division I Richmond Knocks off R-MC in Men’s Basketball 81-57

RICHMOND, VA – Justin Short tallied 16 points, dished 3 assists, and grabbed 3 steals, but R-MC fell to the University of Richmond 81-57 in men’s basketball action Saturday night.
The Spiders outscored the Yellow Jackets 45-28 in the first half. Richmond got 17 points from their bench in the first twenty minutes of play and connected on 17-of-32 shots from the field, including five from three point land to take a 45-28 lead into the locker room at intermission.
R-MC attempted to climb back into the contest, cutting the U of R lead to 49-35 on a three-pointer by Thomas Scheeler with 15 minutes to go in the game. However, the Spiders responded by netting 12 of the next 16 points, upping their advantage to 61-39 on a lay up by Ryan Butler.
Eleven different players scored points for R-MC. In addition to Short’s strong numbers, senior forward Boris Varela grabbed 6 rebounds and tallied 5 points for the Yellow Jackets. Junior guard Andre Hunter registered 7 points for R-MC.
Richmond sophomore guard Kevin Anderson led the Spiders with 17 points. Josh Duinker netted 13 and grabbed 9 rebounds, while David Gonzalvez tallied 11 for U of R.
Randolph-Macon returns to action on next Friday when it takes on Messiah College in the 15th Annual Al Van Wie/Rotary Basketball Classic at the College of Wooster (Oh.). Tip is set for 6:00 p.m.
