The Randolph-Macon College men's basketball team is set to take South America by storm on its "2008 R-MC Friends of Basketball Chilean Tour." The Yellow Jackets are scheduled to leave for Santiago, Chile on Tuesday August 5th, and return Monday, August 18th.
The thirteen returning team members for 2008-09 will be making the trip, along with head coach Mike Rhoades and assistant coach JD Byers.
Paul Gartlan '81 is R-MC's sponsor for the trip along with Randolph-Macon Friends of Basketball. He founded the "Encestando Una Sonrisa", which is the grand tournament in Santiago in which the Yellow Jackets will participate during the week. All proceeds from the tournament go towards funding Chilean children in need of kidney transplants. There are seven other teams in the tournament, including squads from Chile, Argentina, and Brasil.

Concepcion Tops R-MC Men's Hoops 80-63
CHILE-- The Randolph-Macon Men’s Basketball team dropped its final game of the Encestando Una Sonrisa Tournament in Santiago, Chile, losing to Chile Pro League leader Concepcion 80-63.
The Jackets found themselves down 26-15 at the end of the first quarter but were able to cut the margin to 10 at the intermission. R-MC shaved the Concepcion lead down to as many as six halfway through the last quarter, but professional squad proved to be too much and pulled away down the stretch to seal the win.
The Jackets were led by Danny Jones with 19 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Jordan Brown had 16 points and five rebounds. Senior Justin Short had nine points and six assists from the point guard position. Chilean native Boris Varela finished his homecoming with nine points and five rebounds.
The Jackets finished their 2008 R-MC Friends of Basketball Chile trip with a 6-3 record. The team will enjoy one more day in Santiago before arriving home Monday afternoon.

R-MC Tops Catolica 72-57 For First Win of Encestando Una Sonrisa
CHILE--The Randolph-Macon Men’s Basketball team notched its first win of the Encestando Una Sonrisa Tournament with a 72-57 victory over Catolica in Santiago, Chile Friday night.
CHILE--The Randolph-Macon Men’s Basketball team notched its first win of the Encestando Una Sonrisa Tournament with a 72-57 victory over Catolica in Santiago, Chile Friday night.
Randolph-Macon led 26-14 after the first period and built a 15 point lead at halftime. The Jackets used a strong team defensive effort and unselfish offense to preserve the double-digit lead over the host Chilean pro team in the second half and go on to the victory.
R-MC, which is now 6-2 on its 2008 Friends of Basketball Chilean Tour, got a team-high 20 points from senior guard Justin Short, who also dished out six assists in the victory. Short’s classmate Boris Varela scored eight points and pulled down nine rebounds as well.
The Jackets sophomore class shined, led by Kevin Voelkel who posted 13 points and four boards, while Jordan Brown and Danny Jones each scored 10 points on the night.
R-MC will take on another Chilean Professional team on Saturday night when it squares off with DiMayor Pro member Concepcion in its four game of the tournament.

ULBRA Brazil Knocks off R-MC 98-71 Thursday Night
CHILE—ULBRA Brazil handed the Randolph-Macon College Men’s Basketball team a 98-71 loss Thursday night in game two of the Encestando Una Sonrisa Tournament in Santiago, Chile.
ULBRA, which last year took the championship in the top Brazilian league, jumped out to a 13 point lead at the end of the first quarter and extended that to a 21 point advantage at the intermission.
R-MC fought back in the second half, but the size and experience of the ULBRA team, which fashions an average age of 29 years old, proved too much for the Jackets.
Justin Short paced Randolph-Macon with 15 points and four assists in the loss. Short’s backcourt mate Andre Hunter added 11 points and three helpers, while Boris Varela had 10 points and Danny Jones added eight points and nine boards. Jordan Brown and Brandon Braxton had nine and eight tallies, respectively on the evening.
Next up for R-MC will be host Catolica on Friday night in the Yellow Jackets third game of the Encestando Una Sonrisa Tournament.

Argentinean Professional Team Slips by R-MC 74-62
CHILE – Atenas, a professional team from Argentina scored a hard fought 74-62 victory over the Randolph-Macon Men’s Basketball team Wednesday night. R-MC is now 5-1 on its Chilean Tour.
Atenas, which is one of the top professional teams in their country and is coached by Reben Mangano, who guided Argentina to the Gold Medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Greece, led at the end of the first quarter 18-16 and would build an eight-point spread at the break, taking a 36-28 advantage into the intermission.
The Jackets battled back and were able to position themselves for the upset by cutting the Atenas advantage to just six points with four minutes remaining in the game. That would be as close as R-MC would get as the physical Argentinean team pulled away down the stretch.
Danny Jones led the way for R-MC with a team-high 22 points, while collecting six rebounds. Senior point guard Justin Short added 12 points on the night to go along with five rebounds and three steals on the defensive end of the floor. Boris Varela also chipped in with seven points and nine rebounds in a losing effort.
R-MC will continue the Encestando Una Sonrisa Tournament on Thursday when it will take on ULBRA that last year captured the championship of the professional league in Brazil.

Jones and Short Pace R-MC’s 112-68 Win over Universidad Las Americas
CHILE -- The R-MC Men's Basketball team notched its fifth straight win on its Chilean Tour with a 112-68 victory over Universidad Las Americas Tuesday afternoon.
A host of Jackets played well as they ran past Las Americas for the win. Senior point guard Justin Short scored 24 points, added six assists, while hitting five trifectas. Danny Jones had a double-double game with 25 points and 11 rebounds as well as five made shots from beyond the arc.
Joining Jones and Short amongst the scoring leaders was Jordan Brown, who filled up the box score with 15 points, four rebounds, four assists and five steals. Boris Varela had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Brandon Braxton had 12 points, four assists and a pair of blocks. Billy Campion chipped in with eight point and four boards in the win.

R-MC Basketball Stays Perfect on Chilean Tour with a 70-29 Win over Catolica Universidad
CHILE -- Behind a stifling defense and 17 points from Jordan Brown, R-MC continued its success on its 2008 Friends of Basketball Chilean Tour with a 70-29 victory over Catolica Universidad.
The Jackets defense shined, allowing Catolica to just 11 second half points. The Jackets led at the end of the first quarter 20-12 and then used its defensive play to spark a solid transition game to help open up a sizeable advantage during the final three quarters.
Senior point guard Justin Short fueled the offense with 10 assists in the win. Sophomores Brandon Braxton and Danny Jones continued their strong Chilean play in the paint, with Jones scoring eight points and grabbing nine rebounds, while Braxton finished with nine points and four boards.
Senior Boris Varela continued his strong play in his native country, scoring nine points and pulling down seven rebounds. Sophomore Kevin Voelkel scored six points and hauled in seven rebounds as well, while Billy Campion added a six points and five-rebounds off the bench for R-MC. Junior Tim Lawrence scored six off the bench for the Lemon and Black as well.

Well Balanced Attack Sends R-MC Men’s Basketball to a 88-67 Victory over SSCC Vina
CHILE -- The R-MC Men's Basketball team took game three on their South American trip Saturday night beating SSCC Vina from Vina Del Mar 88-67.
The Jackets, who now stand at 3-0 on the Chilean tour, were clicking on all cylinders, scoring in transition and from the outside. They also battled well in the paint, led by sophomore Brandon Braxton’s 20 points and seven rebounds. Jordan Brown scored 15 points and had five steals on the defensive end. Senior Justin Short had 11 points, six assists and three steals.
The Jackets led at the half 41-28 and broke open the game further with a strong second half to seal the 21 point victory. Also registering in the scorebook was Andre Hunter (5 points), Tim Lawrence (8 points), Danny Jones (9 points), Thomas Scheeler (5 points) and Boris Varela (9 points).
The Jackets now head to Santa Cruz Sunday to play Catolica Universidad in an evening matchup Sunday.

R-MC Continues Chilean Tour with a 101-92 Victory Over Estanio Estudios
Santiago, Chile -- R-MC Men's Hoops continued its Chilean Tour on Friday with a victory over Estanio Estudios. The Jackets battled their way to a physical 101-92 win. Leading the way for R-MC was senior Justin Short who had 25 points and six assists.
Jordan Brown had 20 points and six steals on the defensive end, while dishing out four assists. Boris Varela hit double figures for the second straight game with 17 points and five boards. Danny Jones had 12 points and seven rebounds, while Brandon Braxton contributed seven points and six rebounds.
Junior Andre Hunter shined at the point guard spot with six points and seven assists. The Jackets led 29-19 after the first period and 54-48 at the half. A strong third quarter saw the Jackets pull ahead 83-67 and they held on down the stretch for their second win in two days.
The Jackets head out of Santiago Saturday for games at Vina Del Mar and Sunday in Santa Cruz.

Yellow Jackets Men's Basketball Opens Up Chile Trip with Victory
CHILE --The 2008 R-MC Friends of Basketball Chile Trip got off to a great start with a 68-60 win over Catolica Universidad Thursday evening.
This win started a 9 game, 11 day trip for the R-MC Men's Basketball team. The Jackets landed in Chile on Tuesday and have enjoyed the capital city of Santiago.
In the win last night over Catolica Universidad, Chile native Boris Varela scored 14 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in his homecoming. Jordan Brown, Justin Short and Kevin Voelkel each scored 10 points in the victory. The Jackets played at Collegio Colico in the northern part of Santiago in front of a capacity crowd.
The Jackets will play Estanio Estudios Friday night in Santigo before they travel to Vina Del Mar and Santa Cruz for a four-team tournament.
R-MC will return to the capital city next week for the big "Estando Una Sonrisa" tournament in Santigo where they will play four straight nights against South American professional teams.
