Host R-MC Cruises to 91-59 Victory over Immaculata in Opening Game of Rees Jewelers Classic
ASHLAND, VA – Junior point guard Justin Short led all scorers with 19 points as he paced the Randolph-Macon men’s basketball team past Immaculata University (Pa.) 91-59 in the opening game of the 2007 Rees Jewelers Christmas Classic Saturday in Ashland.
R-MC, which has now won five straight games to improve its record to 6-2 on the season, also got 16 points from senior forward Jeremy Dixon while freshman Jordan Brown scored 16 points off the bench for the Yellow Jackets. Dixon snared a game-high seven rebounds and helped the Jackets defense hold the Mighty Macs to just 35.5% shooting on 22-of-62 attempts for the night.
Immaculata (6-2) was led by Rob Jones who had a team-high 12 points on the afternoon while Kyle Finklea had nine points in a losing effort.
The Jackets made 17 of their 34 shots in the first half to take a 44-29 lead into the locker room at intermission. R-MC built on its lead early in the second-half and took a 23 point advantage when Short knocked down a three-pointer to make the score 62-39 with 12:10 left in the game. The Yellow Jackets then closed out the final seven minutes of the game with a 17-5 run to account for the final margin.
R-MC will take on Elms College (Ma.) in the championship game of the tournament on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. The Blazers earned a spot in the final after a 64-54 victory over Hamilton College (N.Y.). The Mighty Macs and the Continentals will square off in the consolation game at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
