Randolph-Macon Uses Balanced Attack to Top Roanoke 73-58 in ODAC Men’s Hoops Action
SALEM, VA – Senior forward Jeremy Dixon led five Yellow Jackets in double figures with 19 points as Randolph-Macon College topped Roanoke College 73-58 in ODAC Men’s Basketball action Sunday afternoon in Salem, Virginia.
R-MC (2-2 / 1-1 ODAC) also got strong contributions from freshman Jordan Brown and junior David Carlson who each had 13 points in the win. Junior Boris Varela had 12 points while junior point guard Justin Short added 11 points of his own in the victory. Carlson and Varela each pulled down a game-high eight rebounds for R-MC.
Roanoke(4-1 / 1-1 ODAC) was led by AJ Dowell who had a team best 16 points in the loss. Keith Carter and Curtis Peery each had 13 points for the Maroons.
The Jackets made 27-of-57 (47.4%) shots on the afternoon, out rebounded RC 33-27 and forced 23 Maroon turnovers. RC converted on 20-of -48 (41.7) shots on the day.
The first-half of the game was close throughout and would be tied at 29-29 when the teams headed to the locker room for the intermission.
R-MC came out and went on a mini 10-3 run to start the half, building a seven point advantage when a lay up by freshman Danny Jones gave the Jackets a 39-32 lead with 15:35 remaining in the contest.
A lay up by Brown extended R-MC’s lead to nine points at 47-38 with 10:38 left in game. RC managed to cut the deficit down to eight points after Dowell made one of two free throws with just over three minutes reaming, but that would be as close as the Maroons would get down the stretch as Brown knocked down a three pointer with 2:20 left to push the lead to 11 and R-MC converted all six of its free-throw attempts in the final two minutes to seal the win.
Randolph-Macon will return to action on Wednesday night when it opens its home slate of games against regional rival Christopher Newport University at 7:00 p.m.
